PROGRAM 1: THE DIGITAL BODY

TOTAL 76 MIN

Corporate capitalism, mass image consumption and countless digital avatars seem to accelerate our everyday perception. Mass data monitoring makes our bodies and minds trackable. Big data analysis lures us into promises of predictability and smooth security. Overall, the internet frantically restructures the human experience. Our new digital personality must include a digital self. Self-optimization seems to go hand in hand with a loss of individuality. This program looks at the consequences of this new digital era and presents work dealing with digital approval as social capital, an emerging global economy wrapped around digital market strategies and digital bodies, and eventually the urgency of rethinking society altogether.

DO YOU LIKE ME 你是否喜欢我

Sam Cooke / 10 min

“Do You Like Me” features a 3D-animated character – evocative of cherubic protagonists from Pixar films – stripped of skin. It delivers a monologue of selfhelp aphorisms. It inhabits photographic spaces such as a frozen yogurt shop, a pharmaceutical factory and a Victorian house. It performs ballet, yoga, prayer, and hide-and-seek. It expresses an erratic range of emotions, which slip into tension with the monologue and action. A fawn appears and disappears. Sounds oscillate with menacing intelligence. Figuration is re-coded, subjectivity is abstracted, and familiar frequencies resonate with new distortions.

THE POSSIBILITIES OF AN ISLAND V 岛屿V 的可能性

Franz Reimer / 8 min

In many cultures and religions it is prohibited to make portraits. Some cultures still believe that a photo can steal the soul of the portrayed. However, now we live in the age of the omnipresent self image. For his video “The Possibilities of an Island V”, Reimer inserts his self-portraits into high gloss fashion photos. The images are accompanied by a sample loop of the sad chorus of pop singer Lana Del Rey’s song “Young and beautiful”: “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful? Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?” The characters in the photos – which appear like transgender clones of the artist Franz Reimer – seem to be cursed to remain in this aesthetic melancholy forever.

THE UTILITY CURVE

John Butler / 17 min

Is there a future? “The Utility Curve” provides a dark preview of a corporatized dystopia and follows two main characters on a symbolic journey from the underworld of on-demand labour, through the desert of opportunity, to the antechamber of acceptance.

GORGEOUS ATTRACTIVE BLOND YOUNG FUNNY WHITE ELEGANT WOMAN

Juliana Höschlova / 12 min

Höschlova performs stock photography and video images from the world of advertisement with a dark ironic twist. A drawn mask of an “every-woman” is superimposed onto her body. This average young woman seems to struggle against a superimposed layer of average expectations. The consumer culture appears to cover everything human with a black-and-white mask, and reduces the individuality of the main character to a stereotype. The absence of color and sound and the reduction of 3D objects to 2D drawings amplifies the superficiality of this zombie-world of advertisement images.

GO TO SCHOOL 上学

OQ Rizki Utama / 13 min

This work deals with the complexities of translation in cultural learning processes by using the strategy of miming. The mime in this work is a professional who is working in Germany. He has an average European body size and appearance. He is covered with green make-up and a green costume. A non-European-looking performer is tied to his back by his knees, hips, chest and wrists. Together, these two characters perform in front of a camera in a standard green screen studio and act out the stereotypes and cliches of the daily life of a European. This video aims to question the stereotypes which arrive when two cultures meet as a consequence of the distance and proximity between these two different cultural groups.
