The concept of death seems to be key to human existence. While all that is living shares the same unavoidable event, death also consequently defines life. Doctors are able to restart your heartbeat. The human brain might keep on functioning, even when your physical body is already declared dead. However, speaking of death is still a taboo in contemporary society. The works in this program examine life’s inevitable ending and reach out to draw a coherent image of death as a provider of meaning to life.

死亡观似乎是探索人类生命意识的关键。人类终将以死亡结束,也就是说死亡定义了生命。医生能重启心跳,大脑能在身体死亡后继续运转。然而死亡终究是当代社会的一个禁忌话题,它令很多人谈之色变。本单元的的作品展示了因死亡而产生的恐惧、挣扎、反抗、认同,以及对不可避免的生命终结产生的疑问。

Why is not nothing? The potential of the absent seems endless. This video is the paradox attempt to observe the permanence of change. The viewpoint of the observer is the city of Cuxhaven. Cuxhaven has the demography today that is predicted for Germany in 25 years. The wind blows invisibly through the video. The sea comes and goes. Nature is neither nice nor evil. The climate is changing. Everything seems to be on the move. The cycles of the planet rotate. Death is always present, but is only punctual and not the end. The future happens elsewhere and comes to the spectator. Do the things change, when you change the way you look at them?

The acting tutorial is a narrative experiment. It takes an ambiguous way of image language to build a serious and humorous performance: a teaching scene. The instructor takes the acting students through the most extreme situations in life: birth, love, loss and death.

THE FEAR 恐惧

The video shows the artist standing still, holding a colorful ice- cream cone. Her gaze appears to be frozen in fear. The ice drips rhythmically on the floor creating vivid stains. The liquid mass of the melting ice alludes to rivers, avalanches and lakes. The cone appears to be a dam about to collapse. The tension that the gaze creates opens up an imaginary space. A catastrophe seems to happen here.

DEATH (DER TOD) 死亡

“Death” is a filmic portrait of death. Various protagonists circle in a “danse macabre” around the topic of death: a sociologist, a playing child, a ferryman, a philosopher, a gambler and the curator of a Sepulchral Cultural Museum. The sociologist Dirk Baecker states: “There is no image of death anymore, we are just whimsical organisms, in disharmony with the world, there is no cosmic order, the only thing left is our body as our home.”

This video shows the relationship between people and nature. The sea is frozen. The fisherman has to wait until the frozen sea melts, only afterwards can he go fishing. There is no spoken dialogue, only the frozen sea, the lonely fisherman and his battered boat. The images are cold and unpopulated. Every scene hovers on the brink of disappearance and persistence.

这件作品探索了人与自然的关系。视频中海面被冻冰封住,一艘出海捕鱼的渔船在等待冰海融化,全片只有渔民、渔船,以及从封冻到融化的大海,无任何对白,营造了一种孤寂冷峻的氛围。艺术家在创作中,交替使用了客观与主观镜头,动态视角和隐藏视角。而现场的实际拍摄情况却更为复杂。
